Cyber Security Professional Development (CSPD)

Maintaining the currency of your professional knowledge is not optional in cyber security. The threat landscape evolves continuously, regulatory expectations shift, and the tools and frameworks that underpin effective practice are updated regularly. The AICS Cyber Security Professional Development (CSPD) programme ensures that accredited members remain current, capable, and credible throughout their careers.

CSPD Requirements

Graduate Members (GAICS) and Fellows (FAICS) of the Australian Institute of Cyber Security are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of CSPD per year to maintain their accreditation. This requirement reflects the standard expected of practitioners in a profession where knowledge becomes outdated quickly and where the consequences of falling behind can be severe.

How to Earn CSPD Hours

CSPD hours can be earned through a range of qualifying activities that contribute to your professional development as a cyber security practitioner. These include attending AICS events, webinars, and networking sessions (typically 1 hour of CSPD per hour of attendance); completing AICS courses such as the Foundations of Cyber Security or Cyber Security Accreditation Course (5 to 10 hours depending on the course); participating in AICS advocacy committees, working groups, or policy consultations; completing relevant external training, certifications, or continuing education programmes in cyber security; presenting at industry conferences or AICS events; and publishing research, articles, or professional guidance in the field of cyber security.

Why CSPD Matters

Professional development requirements are a hallmark of every serious professional body. Organisations such as CPA Australia, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the Law Society of New South Wales all mandate continuing professional development as a condition of maintaining professional standing. AICS applies the same principle to cyber security because the profession demands it.

For employers and clients, a practitioner who maintains their CSPD hours demonstrates an ongoing commitment to competence. For practitioners, it provides a structured framework for staying current and a record of professional growth that supports career progression.

Recording and Reporting

AICS members can log their CSPD activities through the My AICS member portal. Activities are recorded against the member’s profile and contribute to their annual CSPD total. Members are encouraged to maintain a contemporaneous record of their development activities throughout the year rather than recording them retrospectively.

Upcoming CSPD Opportunities

AICS regularly hosts events, workshops, and webinars that qualify for CSPD hours. Check the News and Resources section of the AICS website for upcoming events, or contact us at [email protected] for more information about professional development opportunities.
